Title: Phase I Final Report

Abstract

Prixarc LLC is reporting on the results of its DOE SBIR Phase I project for the development of Seamless Cross-Technology Communication Platform for Internet of Things (IoT) Applications. IoT devices and existing smart systems communicate through various wireless technologies. However, different technologies cannot directly communicate with each other, making it hard to achieve seamless and secure connections between IoT applications and smart systems. Besides connectivity issue, some wireless technology such as Wi-Fi requires a relatively high power that poses challenge to energy-constraint IoT devices. In the meantime, energy efficient transmission technology such as ZigBee has little security protection which may compromise a smart system. To address these problems, the Prixarc LLC and University of Dayton (UD) research team has proposed a novel seamless-IoT platform that will allow seamless, energy efficient and secure IoT communications. This report describes our progress with design and implementation of a seamless, energy efficient and secure IoT platform based on Wi-Fi and ZigBee technologies using software-defined radio nodes. In this Phase I project, we have demonstrated (i) seamless communication for IoT devices using Wi-Fi and ZigBee technologies; (ii) improved transmission energy efficiency of IoT devices through the automatic switching between Zigbee and Wi-Fi; and (iii) physical-layermore » security supported authentication and secret key generation for IoT communications. In summary, the Prixarc and UD team has successfully accomplished all of its Phase I tasks and demonstrated the feasibility of the seamless, energy efficient and secure IoT concept. We believe that this success provides a strong foundation for the development of smart IoT modules in the Phase II project.« less
