Title: Decay modes of the Hoyle state in C 12

Abstract

Long ago, Fred Hoyle proposed the existence of an excited level in 12C, which decays into 3α. This level, now nicknamed Hoyle state, was found in experiments and plays a crucial role in our understanding of stellar evolution. Modern experiments concentrate in understanding the geometry of the decay, i.e. a sequential decay 12C → 8Be* + α → 3α or a direct decay 12C→3α. Experiments favor the first channel but there might be a possibility of a lower excitation state, which decays directly into 3α. Our paper discusses the probabilities of decay into different channels.
