Recent glass dissolution experiments, conducted at 90{degrees}C in the presence of potential backfill materials, indicate remarkably faster glass corrosion in the presence of clay, compared to tests where the glass is leached either alone or with alternative backfill materials. This effect correlates with the clay content in the backfill, and may be attributed to the removal of silica from solution. The basis for discharge of low and intermediate activity wastes into the ground is the retention of the nuclides, particularly cesium and strontium, by ion exchange on the soil particles. Studies at Oak Ridge have shown that minerals with the mica structure are efficient in selectively sorbing cesium. The Role of Phosphorus and Soot on the Deactivation of Diesel Oxidation Catalysts

The deactivation of diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) by soot contamination and lube-oil derived phosphorus poisoning is investigated. Pt/CeO2/-Al2O3 DOCs aged using three different protocols developed by the authors and six high mileage field-returned DOCs of similar formulation are evaluated for THC and CO oxidation performance using a bench-flow reactor. Collectively, these catalysts exhibit a variety of phosphorus and soot morphologies contributing to performance deactivation.
