In this study, two new polyhydrides of calcium have been synthesized at high pressures and high temperatures and characterized by Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Above 20 GPa and 700 K, we synthesize a phase having a monoclinic (C2/m) structure with Ca ₂H ₅ composition, which is characterized by a distinctive vibration at 3789 cm ^–1 at 25 GPa. The observed Raman spectrum is in close agreement with first-principles calculations of a Ca ₂H ₅ structure characterized by a lattice containing a central layer of H ₂ molecules oriented along the (100) direction. Equilibrium involving selected LaNi/sub x/ and LaCo/sub 5-x/M/sub x/ hydrides: phase transformations and related studies

Phase transformations of LaNi/sub 5/, La/sub 2/Ni/sub 3/, LaNi, and La/sub 7/Ni/sub 3/ at H/sub 2/ pressures and temperatures up to 700 atm and 550/sup 0/C are investigated for the first time. At 525/sup 0/C and pressures less than 60 atm LaNi/sub 5/ exists as ..cap alpha.. phase LaNi/sub 5/. Higher pressures cause the formation of phase f nominal composition LaNiH/sub approx. 3.5/ together with LaNi/sub 13/H/sub approx. 3.5/ or Ni. LaNi at 525/sup 0/C and intermediate pressures less than 9 atm exists as LaH/sub 3-x/ and LaNi/sub 5/. At higher pressures only the LaNiH/sub approx. 3.5/ phases are observed.more »« less

The phase diagram of the niobium--hydrogen system continues to be actively investigated. At low temperatures in particular, considerable uncertainty exists as to the locations of phase boundaries and the structures of the different phases. In the range of high hydrogen concentration, i.e., approximately 0.7 less than or equal to H/Nb less than or equal to 1.0, three low-temperature phases exist. These are the orthorhombic epsilon phase with ideal stoichiometry Nb/sub 4/H/sub 3/, the lambda phase with an as yet unknown structure and ideal stoichiometry Nb/sub 5/H/sub 4/, and the pseudo-cubic ..gamma.. phase with ideal stoichiometry NbH. The distribution of Pa/sup 233/ in the pyrometallungical separation of uranium from uranium--thorium alloys was investigated. Work has continued on the separation of minor constituents from uranium by selective oxidation or reduction reactions utilizing liquid zinc and KCI--LiCI eutectic as solvents, ZnCl/sub 2/ as oxidizing agent, and magnesium or calcium as reducing agents. Oxidation of amorphous Ni--Nb films: Surface spectroscopy studies

Sputter deposited amorphous Ni--Nb alloy films have been proposed as thin-film metallization layers for high-temperature (>300 /sup 0/C) compound semiconductor applications. We have used x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the oxidation behavior of 1-..mu..m-thick, sputter deposited, amorphous Ni/sub 60/ Nb/sub 40/ films exposed to oxygen or room air at temperatures in the range 30--500 /sup 0/C for times of 5 min to 45 h. The initial stages of oxidation were examined in situ at oxygen partial pressures below 1 x 10/sup -6/ Torr.
