Alkali metal polychalcogenide salts of the form A{sub 2}Q{sub x} (where A = Na, K; Q = S, Se, Te; x = 1, 2, 3, 4) have been used in moderate temperature solid-state metathesis reactions with lanthanoid halides, LnX;{sub 3}(Ln - La, Pr; X = Cl, Br), to prepare four phases of lanthanoid chalcogenides at temperatures below 400{degrees}C. For lanthanum,{alpha}-LaS{sub 2},{beta}-LaS{sub 2}, LaSe{sub 2}, and LaTe{sub 3} were prepared and an irreversible phase transformation at 450{degrees}C between the metastable {alpha}{minus} and thermodynamically stable {beta}-LaS{sub 2} was observed. For praseodymium, {alpha}{minus}PrS{sub 2}, PrSe{sub 2}, and PrTe{sub 3} were prepared and no phase transition from {alpha}{minus} to {beta}{minus}PrS{sub 2} was observed.
