Title: Hardening of the Peridigm Peridynamics Software for Industry Use

Complex materials with heterogeneities and discontinuities is a focus of current research in materials science and engineering because such materials promise to have environmental benefits, energy production and energy conservation benefits, and improved product performance and cost savings. Existing Computer- Aided Engineering (CAE) software applies Finite Element Method (FEM) to solve the equations of classical continuum mechanics. FEM has received widespread acceptance for structural analysis of traditional materials. However, challenges persist in the modeling of complex phenomena in material with 3-D mesostructural discontinuities (e.g., voids, pre-cracks) and heterogeneities (e.g., interfaces) contributing to convoluted phenomena such as brittle fracture and cohesive debonding. In response to these challenges, Sunergolab Inc. in collaboration with research Small Business Technology Transfer Partner (STTR) Sandia National Laboratories and industry partner ESI North America endeavored in hardening the Peridigm Peridynamic code for industry use. Peridynamics is the new mathematical theory introduced at Sandia National Laboratories, which unifies the mechanics of continuous media, cracks, and discrete particles. Peridynamics eliminates the need to estimate derivatives of displacements at discontinuities and discards requirements on mesh size in damage models addressing the deficiencies of mainstream FEM software. The overall objective of the Phase I study was to establish the feasibility of shrink wrapping of the Phase I Peridigm into commercial mainstream FEM software. This objective was successfully achieved.
