Title: Potential Improvements for the One-Dimensional Imager of Neutrons at the Sandia Z Facility

Abstract

Understanding the neutron source shape is critical for improving Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) implosions at the Sandia Z machine. Neutron source-shape measurements for MagLIF are, however, challenging due to the yields, extended axial source regions, x-ray backgrounds and physical shock waves produced by MagLIF sources. Initial tests of a slit neutron imager for 1- dimensional neutron imaging along the axial dimension of MagLIF implosions have shown that a rolled-slit aperture and CR-39 plastic detector can image the neutron production along the axial dimension. In this whitepaper, we suggest straightforward improvements to the neutron imager design that will allow significantly improved signal-to-noise performance.
