Title: Constraining Seismic Traveltime Tomography to Produce Optimal Layered Earth Models Final Report CRADA No. TC-1030-94

Abstract

This project was designed to produce and test algorithms optimized to use seismic data between boreheoles in the earth in order to construct constrained images (such as layered earth models) that best fit available crosswell seismic data. New high resolution reflection imaging techniques being developed by TomoSeis Inc. require layered earth models, so methods that automatically produce optimal layered earth models are highly desirable. The algorithms were developed and tested on real field data. Although deliverables were met, the results of the project show that the use of these methods may be of limited use in some field acquisition scenarios because the data most useful for producing the constrained images is either very difficult or impossible to obtain. More highly constrained images than those originally envisioned were found to be of most use in analyzing available field data.
