Title: High Performance Coating for Barium Borate Pockels Cells Final Report CRADA No. TSB-1166-95

Abstract

Quantum Technology is a manufacturer of high powered, non-linear, electrooptical devices. They were awarded 1995 SBIR funds to grow families of Borate crystals. They were developing a direct CZ method to grow crystals Up 10 x 10 x 20 mm ~ 10 days, about four times faster than the conventional method. A protective coating for these short wavelength laser rods would lower manufacturing costs of the Pockels cell and greatly extend the performance of Quantum’s new Pockels cell product. A robust AR coating would enhance the market acceptance of BBO devices. QTI was a potential outlet for this and other high damage threshold technologies developed at LLNL. The Vacuum processes Lab (VPL) in LLNL had expertise both in protective coatings as well as high laser damage threshold coatings. VPL demonstrated a unique high laser damage threshold anti-reflective coating. This opportunity to work with QTI allowed VPL not only to extend this particular capability but also to do so in a high technology, commercially viable arena.
