Title: Computed Tomography of the Human Breast Final Report CRADA No. TSB-0953-94

Abstract

SMS was a small business incorporate: in Texas in 1979. The company pioneered the development of industrial radiograph] and tomography, and is a leading producer of commercial computerized tomographic (CT) and digital radiographic systems, The company is a recognized expert in the design of industrial CT systems. They used this expertise to developed a conceptual design for a Volume View Mammography System (VVMS). This system was a CT system &signed specifically to image the human breast. Current state-of-the-art for mammography using CT technology is virtually non-existent since current technologies and geometries would create a dose prohibitive systems. LLNL and SMS worked together to address the issues of optimization with respect to both hardware and geometry. LLNL expertise was in the modeling of xrays with breast tissue while SMS’S was in hardware optimization, The technology of interest was x-ray production, detection and CT reconstruction. This was the exclusive interest and business of Scientific Measurement Systems (SMS) since their incorpor~tion, They executed research and development contracts with both private and government entities. SMS also conducted inkrnal research programs that led to sponsored research. They installed industrial CT systems in seven states and in three foreign countries.
