The goal of this three-year project is to build a hand-held, high-resolution, germanium-based, gamma-ray spectrometer of 140% relative efficiency that is mechanically cooled. The final instrument should be light enough to be easily carried by one person, and the power consumption should be low enough for battery operation. We completed the Ge-140 design and demonstrated a cryostat with excellent thermal isolation. We performed tests to compare and verify the performance of viable cryocooler candidates, and developed a suspension system that will protect the crystal against shock and vibration.
