  • The negative parity energy levels of the even-even Ge isotopes with mass number between 64 and 76 are studied systematically by enlarging the model space of the interacting boson approximation model to include both collective and noncollective basis states. The basis states consist of [ital N][sub [ital B]][minus]1 s[ital d]-boson plus a [ital f]-boson configuration and [ital N][sub [ital B]][minus]1 [ital sd] boson plus a fermion pair configuration. The fermions are allowed to occupy the [ital f][sub 5/2] and [ital g][sub 9/2] single-particle orbitals, respectively. It was found that the negative parity energy levels of [sup 64[minus]76]Ge nuclei can bemore » described reasonably well. The intensities of the collective configuration in 3[sup [minus]] states increase when going from nucleus [sup 64]Ge to nucleus [sup 72]Ge and decrease from nucleus [sup 72]Ge to nucleus [sup 74]Ge. The [ital B]([ital E]3;3[sub 1][sup [minus]][r arrow]0[sub 1][sup +]) values are calculated and compared with the available observed data.« less

  • Laser spectroscopy based on resonant ionization of laser-desorbed atoms has been used to study the neutron-rich tellurium isotopes with the COMPLIS facility at ISOLDE-CERN. The isotope shift and the hyperfine structure of several neutron-rich Te isotopes: 120-136Te and 123m-133mTe have been measured. From the hyperfine structure and the isotope shift we can extract the magnetic and quadrupole moments and the change in the mean square charge radius respectively. The mean square charge radii of the even-even isotopes have been deduced and their comparison with the known data for the other elements near Z=50 is presented.   • Neutron-rich, odd-{ital Z} nuclei {sup 145}La and {sup 147}La populated in spontaneous fission of {sup 248}Cm were studied using the EUROGAM array. The experiment indicates the presence of similar octupole correlations in the studied La isotopes as found in the barium core nuclei. Alternating-parity structures were found in {sup 145}La, indicating enhanced octupole correlations, as observed in {sup 144}Ba, while in {sup 147}La octupole effects are weakened by alignment phenomena, as seen in the core nucleus {sup 146}Ba. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
  • Several new high-spin states are observed in the prompt {gamma}-rays emitted from the neutron-rich, odd-Z {sup 145,147}La fragments produced in the spontaneous fission of {sup 252}Cf. Alternating parity bands are extended up to spins 41/2 and 43/2 in {sup 145,147}La, respectively. A new band completes the evidence for two sets of parity doublets expected for octupole correlations. Eight B(E1)/B(E2) ratios (four new) between two bands in {sup 145}La are all essentially constant and somewhat larger than similar ratios in {sup 143,144}Ba, where stable octupole deformation and/or correlations are reported. The new ratios out of the 31/2{sup {minus}} levels in bothmore » nuclei show a sharp spike compared to other states, presumably from a strong reduction in E2 strengths in this backbending region. In {sup 145}La, collective bands show competition and coexistence between symmetric and asymmetric shapes. Band crossings occur in both nuclei around {h_bar}{omega}{approx}0.26{endash}0.30 MeV.
