Laboratory steamflood experiments were conducted on volcaniclastic sediments of the Temblor Fm., central San Joaquin Basin, to determine the nature and extent of artificial diagenetic changes that may accompany steamflood EOR and to develop a basis for calibrating subsequent reaction path calculations using the program EQ3/6. Experiments, simulating reservoir conditions proximal to the injection well, involved independent vapor and liquid phases for two different flood compositions. Dissolution of all sediment components, including quartz/chert, K-feldspar, plagioclase, smectite, clinoptilolite, and rock fragments, was observed in all experiments. Experiments that simulated vapor flood (pH=4.6) did not produce authigenic precipitates. Experiments that simulated the liquid flood (pH-11-12 due to the dissociation of HCO{sub 3}{sup {minus}}) produced authigenic analcime, illite, smectite, mixed-layer I/S, albite, and iron-bearing phase, and a calcium phase (possible tobermorite). Comparisons of pre- and post-flood field core document framework mineral dissolution, grain fracturing, and smectite precipitation, in concert with the results of laboratory simulations. Reaction path calculations quantify diagentic changes that modify reservoir quality. Predicted mineral reactions are similar to those observed in laboratory experiments, including precipitation of tobermorite, analcime, disordered albite, and smectite, with a concomitant decrease in porosity. Experiments and numerical simulations reveal that fluid chemistry evolution is strongly dependent on disparate solubilities of minerals and volcanic glass. Coupled reaction-flow modeling is essential to determine the timing and spatial variation of these artificial diagenetic reactions.
