  • We present in this paper the mechanical construction procedures, the tools and the relative quality check of a triple-GEM detector. This kind of detector is the result of R and D activity performed for the study of detectors for the hard radiation environment of the innermost region, around the beam pipe, of the first muon station of the LHCb experiment. We also present the performances of the chamber final design, operated with Ar/CO2/CF4 (45/15/40) gas mixture, obtained at PS beam facility at CERN.
  • The CMS pixel phase-1 upgrade project replaces the current pixel detector with an upgraded system with faster readout electronics during the extended year-end technical stop of 2016/2017. New electronics prototypes for the system have been developed, and tests in a realistic environment for a comprehensive evaluation are needed. A full readout test stand with either the same hardware as used in the current CMS pixel detector or the latest prototypes of upgrade electronics has been built. The setup enables the observation and investigation of a jitter increase in the data line associated with trigger rate increases. This effect is duemore » to the way in which the clock and trigger distribution is implemented in CMS. A new prototype of the electronics with a PLL based on a voltage controlled quartz crystal oscillator (QPLL), which works as jitter filter, in the clock distribution path was produced. With the test stand, it was confirmed that the jitter increase is not seen with the prototype, and also good performance was confirmed at the expected detector operation temperature ($-$20 °C).« less
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) joined the multi- national L* Detector collaboration in early 1990. The L* Detector has been described in great detail in a number of documents submitted to the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Laboratory. LLNL's participation in the L* collaboration consisted of a multi- disciplinary effort involving a number of physicists, engineers and technologists from different areas of the laboratory who came together to identify areas of research, development and engineering on the L* Detector where LLNL's expertise and technological capabilities could best be utilized. Among these capabilities, superconducting magnet technology, chemistry and materials science, and designmore » of new types of physics detectors were deemed areas of LLNL expertise best suited to the R D effort needed for L*. This paper will describe the work carried out at LLNL on muon chamber R D for the L* detector in FY 1991. Because of the L* proposal rejection in May 1991, and the subsequent restructuring to form the GEM detector collaboration in July 1991, the work described in this paper will also be seen to the applicable to the envisioned muon chamber subsystem for GEM.« less
