The intent of this project was to perform the necessary research and development leading to the static test demonstration of a 10 Gbit/in2 magnetic read sensor head. The specific class of structure design was chosen to be Current-Perpendicular-to-Plane (CPP) with GMR materials since this geometry has favorable size scaling properties. Material development, electron beam patterning, and simulation design were assigned primarily to LLNL personnel. Device integration, including media transition noise and contact lead resistance, were assigned primarily to Read-Rite personnel. Test structure design, processing, and testing were the joint responsibility of both partners.
