Sonochemical synthesis of nanometer-sized particles of molybdenum silicides
- Washington Univ., St. Louis, MO (United States)
The molybdenum silicides MoSi{sub 2} and MO{sub 5}Si{sub 3} are promising intermetallics for high-temperature applications because of their oxidative stability, high melting points, and high-temperature strengths. The authors are attempting to prepare molybdenum silicide materials having nanometer grain sizes because the reduction of grain sizes to the nanometer regime is expected to dramatically increase strength and fracture toughness. The authors have recently found that solution-phase sonochemical coreductions of Mo and Si salts produce nanometer-sized particles of molybdenum silicides. It is believed that ultrasonic cavitation generates abundant particle nuclei in the coreduction processes, thereby leading ultimately to the small particle sizes that are observed. The synthetic details, nanoparticle characterization, and the mechanical properties of the consolidated materials will be presented.
