Title: Soft actuators and soft actuating devices

Abstract

A soft buckling linear actuator is described, including: a plurality of substantially parallel bucklable, elastic structural components each having its longest dimension along a first axis; and a plurality of secondary structural components each disposed between and bridging two adjacent bucklable, elastic structural components; wherein every two adjacent bucklable, elastic structural components and the secondary structural components in-between define a layer comprising a plurality of cells each capable of being connected with a fluid inflation or deflation source; the secondary structural components from two adjacent layers are not aligned along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis; and the secondary structural components are configured not to buckle, the bucklable, elastic structural components are configured to buckle along the second axis to generate a linear force, upon the inflation or deflation of the cells. Methods of actuation using the same are also described.

  • A manipulating device for actuating securing devices for fuel elements in a nuclear reactor in which rod-like fuel elements are disposed in a moderator unit and the fuel elements are connected to pipe connections mounted in the securing devices and through which coolant flows. The apparatus consists of a traveling assembly of concentric relatively movable tubes that have at one end loops adapted to engage or co-operate with any selected securing device and which are operated from the other end of the tube assembly, which is shielded from radiation at the tool end. • A soft actuator is described, including: a rotation center having a center of mass; a plurality of bucklable, elastic structural components each comprising a wall defining an axis along its longest dimension, the wall connected to the rotation center in a way that the axis is offset from the center of mass in a predetermined direction; and a plurality of cells each disposed between two adjacent bucklable, elastic structural components and configured for connection with a fluid inflation or deflation source; wherein upon the deflation of the cell, the bucklable, elastic structural components are configured to buckle in the predeterminedmore » direction. A soft actuating device including a plurality of the soft actuators and methods of actuation using the soft actuator or soft actuating device disclosed herein are also described.« less
  • The present invention provides methods, devices and device components for fabricating patterns on substrate surfaces, particularly patterns comprising structures having microsized and/or nanosized features of selected lengths in one, two or three dimensions. The present invention provides composite patterning devices comprising a plurality of polymer layers each having selected mechanical properties, such as Young's Modulus and flexural rigidity, selected physical dimensions, such as thickness, surface area and relief pattern dimensions, and selected thermal properties, such as coefficients of thermal expansion, to provide high resolution patterning on a variety of substrate surfaces and surface morphologies.
  • A soft solder of Pb alloy for semiconductor devices that contains 1 to 65 wt % of Sn or In or both, the balance being Pb and incidental impurities which include less than 50 ppb of radioisotopes and the count of radioactive alpha-particles being not more than 0.5 CPH/cm/sub 2/. The solder exhibits high adhesive strength and good wettability. The properties of this material may be further improved by addition of 1 to 10 wt % of Ag.
