  • Stellar wind is thought to be the main process responsible for the spin down of main-sequence stars. The extraction of angular momentum by a magnetized wind has been studied for decades, leading to several formulations for the resulting torque. However, previous studies generally consider simple dipole or split monopole stellar magnetic topologies. Here we consider, in addition to a dipolar stellar magnetic field, both quadrupolar and octupolar configurations, while also varying the rotation rate and the magnetic field strength. Sixty simulations made with a 2.5D cylindrical and axisymmetric set-up, and computed with the PLUTO code, were used to find torquemore » formulations for each topology. We further succeed to give a unique law that fits the data for every topology by formulating the torque in terms of the amount of open magnetic flux in the wind. We also show that our formulation can be applied to even more realistic magnetic topologies, with examples of the Sun in its minimum and maximum phases as observed at the Wilcox Solar Observatory, and of a young K-star (TYC-0486-4943-1) whose topology has been obtained by Zeeman-Doppler Imaging.« less
  • The Synchrotron Radiation source under construction at the LNLS in Brazil is composed of 12 bending magnets and 3 quadrupole families. This paper reports on a new topology of high-performance dc current power supply developed to feed the magnets. The main goal is to get a high performance (mean current stability, tracking, repeatability and ripple better than 100 ppm), highly efficient and reliable system. To achieve these goals, a new power supply topology was developed based on a modular switched-mode power supply associated in series with a 6 pulse SCR bridge. To reduce possible high levels of electromagnetic interference, onlymore » a small fraction of the total load voltage is used to feed the SMPS; more than 90% of the power is delivered by the SCR bridge. Furthermore, the load current is shared among the SMPS modules, so that each one switches only a fraction of the total current.« less
  • We analyze the chiral Schwinger model in nontrivial topological sectors, performing its complete bosonization. In order to do this, we propose a prescription for evaluating the fermion determinant in the presence of the zero modes, valid for non-Hermitian Dirac operators, in general. By taking fermionic external sources into account in every step of the calculation, we discover a phase ambiguity which affects the effective action and can be used to render the result invariant with respect to particular choices of the topologically charged background configuration. Consistency requirements on the bosonization procedure fix the phase ambiguity and determine a unique valuemore » for the Jackiw-Rajaraman regularization parameter in all sectors with a nonzero topological charge. We thus find that nontrivial sectors have a null contribution to all fermionic correlation functions. Our method is also checked against the analogous results for the Schwinger model.« less
  • We discuss the phase structure (in the 1/[ital N] expansion) of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in curved spacetime with nontrivial topology [ital scrM][sup 3][times][ital S][sup 1]. The evaluation of the effective potential of the composite field [bar [psi]][psi] is presented in the linear curvature approximation (topology is treated exactly) and in the leading order of the 1/[ital N] expansion. The combined influence of topology and curvature to the phase transitions is investigated. It is shown, in particular, that at zero curvature and for small radius of the torus there is a second order phase transition from the chiral symmetric to themore » chiral nonsymmetric phase. When the curvature grows and (or) the radius of [ital S][sup 1] decreases, then the phase transition is in general of first order. The dynamical fermionic mass is also calculated in a number of different situations.« less
