  • Ytterbium-ion-doped double-clad optical fibres were developed. The differential quantum efficiency of a diode-pumped fibre laser, fabricated on the basis of such optical fibres with a fibre Bragg grating, was 90%. (lasers)
  • We report on the development of prototype vibration and acoustic motion sensors using highly over-coupled couplers (HOCC). A HOCC fabricated with equal power in both arms after 550 optical power transfer cycles and when illuminated with a light source of 15 {mu}W at a wavelength of 850 nm, this device has a sensitivity of 0.9 {mu}W/{mu}m. A prototype of an optical fiber vibration sensor was made by clamping the 550 cycled HOCC to a cantilever stage to which a vibration source was attached. The maximum linear range of this particular prototype is 12 {mu}m. We have also demonstrated a HOCCmore » having 2150 cycles at 850 nm which has a sensitivity of 4 {mu}W/{mu}m. A HOCC sensor has the possible advantages of high resolution, low cost, and all fiber structure. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}« less
  • A highly efficient nano-periodical grating is theoretically investigated for spectral beam combining (SBC) and is experimentally implemented for attaining high-brightness laser from a diode laser array. The rigorous coupled-wave analysis with the S matrix method is employed to optimize the parameters of the grating. According the optimized parameters, the grating is fabricated and plays a key role in SBC cavity. The diffraction efficiency of this grating is optimized to 95% for the output laser which is emitted from the diode laser array. The beam parameter product of 3.8 mm mrad of the diode laser array after SBC is achieved at the outputmore » power of 46.3 W. The optical-to-optical efficiency of SBC cavity is measured to be 93.5% at the maximum operating current in the experiment.« less
  • Nanofocused x rays are indispensable because they can provide high spatial resolution and high sensitivity for x-ray nanoscopy/spectroscopy. A focusing system using total reflection mirrors is one of the most promising methods for producing nanofocused x rays due to its high efficiency and energy-tunable focusing. The authors have developed a fabrication system for hard x-ray mirrors by developing elastic emission machining, microstitching interferometry, and relative angle determinable stitching interferometry. By using an ultraprecisely figured mirror, they realized hard x-ray line focusing with a beam width of 25 nm at 15 keV. The focusing test was performed at the 1-km-long beamlinemore » of SPring-8.« less
  • An efficient and practical laser diode module is demonstrated forsingle-mode fiber applications. The module is developed through use of anearlier proposed combination lens method, where a hemispherical ended gradedindex rod lens and virtual fiber are employed. Since lens and virtual fibermisalignment tolerances are large in this coupling method, the YAG laser weldingtechnique is easily applicable. This laser diode module has not only a simplestructure but also high coupling efficiency, excellent reproducibility, andextremely high reliability.
