The thermopower of PbTe as a function of temperature and doping level is reported based on Boltzmann transport calculations using the first principles relativistic electronic structure as obtained with the Engel-Vosko generalized gradient approximation. The results are discussed in relation to experimental data. For p-type material there is an enhancement at high-doping levels due to the onset of an increased density of states starting ~0.2 eV below the valence band edge. This leads to agreement between the calculated thermopower and recent results on PbTe with heavy Tl doping.

Prospective high thermoelectric performance of the heavily $p$ -doped half-Heusler compound CoVSn

The electronic structure and transport properties of the half-Heusler compound CoVSn are studied in this paper systematically by combining first-principles electronic structure calculations and Boltzmann transport theory. The band structure at the valence-band edge is complex with multiple maxima derived from hybridized transition element d states. The result is a calculated thermopower larger than 200 μV /Κ within a wide range of doping concentrations and temperatures for heavily doped p-type CoVSn. The thermoelectric properties additionally benefit from the corrugated shapes of the hole pockets in our calculated isoenergy surfaces. We report the investigation of Zintl-phase Na(K){sub 8}SnSb{sub 4} and related compounds that contain SnSb{sub 4} tetrahedral anions using first principles electronic structure, Boltzmann transport, and density functional phonon calculations. We find that these compounds are narrow-gap semiconductors and there is a combination of heavy and light bands at valence band edge, which may lead to a combination of high thermopower and reasonable conductivity. High values of the thermopower are found for p-type doping within the Boltzmann transport theory. Unusual Transport and Strongly Anisotropic Thermopower in PtCoO ₂ and PdCoO ₂

We show, using Boltzmann transport calculations and analysis of experimental data, that hexagonal PdCoO ₂ and PtCoO ₂ have a highly unusual metallic transport. The in-plane transport is typical of a very good metal, with high conductivity and low positive thermopower. The c-axis transport is completely different, with 2 orders of magnitude lower, but still coherent, conductivity and remarkably a very large negative thermopower. This large anisotropy of the thermopower provides an opportunity for investigating transport in a highly unusual regime using bulk materials.
