Magnetron sputtered thin films of Cu, Nb, and Cu-Nb multilayers with 2.5 and 5 nm nominal layer thickness were deposited on Si and implanted with 4He+ and 3He+ ions. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy and nuclear reaction analysis, respectively, were used to measure the 4He+ and 3He+ concentration profile with depth inside the films. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy was used to characterize the helium bubbles. Analysis of the contrast from helium bubbles in defocused transmission electron microscope images showed a minimum bubble diameter of 1.25 nm. Here, this paper addresses the role of misfit dislocations in the nucleation and growth of nanoscale He bubbles at interfaces. In a recent work, we studied the nanoscale effects on the capillarity equation and on equilibrium conditions. We proposed an expression for surface energy and for the equation of state, EOS, for He in bubbles, which have a size dependence that captures the role of the interface forces, which become relevant at the nanoscale. Large strain deformation is used to make fine nanolayered two-phase composites from stacks of conventional polycrystalline sheets. The final materials made by this technique possess a crystallographically highly oriented structure containing nearly atomically perfect interfaces prevailing ubiquitously throughout the material. How this ordered structure evolves with strain from the coarser, more disordered state is not known. Here, using microstructural analysis and computational modeling, we discover a local interface-affected zone (IAZ) possessing the same crystallographically sharp structure in coarse layered composites as the final nanolayered composites. First-principles study of point defects at a semicoherent interface

Most of the atomistic modeling of semicoherent metal-metal interfaces has so far been based on the use of semiempirical interatomic potentials. Here, we show that key conclusions drawn from previous studies are in contradiction with more precise ab-initio calculations. In particular we find that single point defects do not delocalize, but remain compact near the interfacial plane in Cu-Nb multilayers. Lastly, we give a simple qualitative explanation for this difference on the basis of the well known limited transferability of empirical potentials.
