Magnetism and nematic order are the two nonsuperconducting orders observed in iron-based superconductors. To elucidate the interplay between them and ultimately unveil the pairing mechanism, several models have been investigated. In models with quenched orbital degrees of freedom, magnetic fluctuations promote stripe magnetism, which induces orbital order. In models with quenched spin degrees of freedom, charge fluctuations promote spontaneous orbital order, which induces stripe magnetism. Coexistence of Ferromagnetic and Stripe Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in ${SrCo}_{2} {As}_{2}$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo ₂As ₂, derived from SrFe _2-xCo _xAs ₂ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveal the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors Q _AF=(1,0) and Q _FM=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo ₂As ₂ are closely associated with a flatband of the e _g orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the tmore »« less

Competing magnetic fluctuations in iron pnictide superconductors: Role of ferromagnetic spin correlations revealed by NMR

In the iron pnictide superconductors, theoretical calculations have consistently shown enhancements of the static magnetic susceptibility at both the stripe-type antiferromagnetic and in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) wave vectors. However, the possible existence of FM fluctuations has not yet been examined from a microscopic point of view. Here, using ⁷⁵As NMR data, we provide clear evidence for the existence of FM spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe ₂As ₂ families of iron-pnictide superconductors. The newly discovered iron based superconductors have shown a great deal of interest in the condensed matter physics community around the world to explore the experimental and theoretical aspects of electronic properties of these materials to underline the technological potential.
