The pathways for the formation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) by dehydration of d-fructose and for the formation of levulinic acid and formic acid from HMF by rehydration were investigated by in situ13C and 1H NMR using both unlabeled and 13C-labeled fructose. Water or DMSO was used as the solvent with Amberlyst 70, PO43–/niobic acid, or sulfuric acid as catalysts. Only HMF is observed using NMR for fructose dehydration in DMSO with any of the three catalysts or without a catalyst. Production of levoglucosenone and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from cellulose in polar aprotic solvent–water mixtures

In this paper, we demonstrate a process to produce levoglucosenone (LGO) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from cellulose in up to 65% carbon yield using sulfuric acid as catalyst and a solvent consisting of a mixture of tetrahydrofuran (THF) with water. In pure THF, LGO is the major product of cellulose dehydration, passing through levoglucosan as an intermediate. Increasing the water content (up to 5 wt%) results in HMF as the major product. HMF is formed both by glucose dehydration and direct dehydration of LGA. The maximum combined yield of LGO and HMF (~65 carbon%) is achieved in the presence of 1–2.5more »« less

Correlations for Adsorption of Oxygenates onto Zeolites from Aqueous Solutions

Henry’s constants (K{sub ads}) for adsorption of C₃ polyfunctional molecules onto zeolites from aqueous solutions at 278 K were obtained and compared with the octanol–water partition coefficients, K{sub ow}, which were calculated using the prevalent ClogP group contribution method. K{sub ads} increases linearly with K{sub ow} for these adsorbates on H–ZSM-5 (MFI), FAU, BEA, and ITQ-1 (MWW). K{sub ads} values for C₂–C₆ diol adsorption at 278 K are also linearly correlated with K{sub ow} regardless of interactions in the bulk phase as measured by the solution activity coefficient. We apply ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) experiments to investigate the molecular structure, morphology and growth mechanism of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) derived humins as a function of HMF conversion. Our FTIR data support a reaction pathway in which humins form either through a ring opening mechanism and/or through substitution at the α or β position via nucleophilic attack. The addition of DMSO as a co-solvent leads to significant changes in the FTIR spectra of humins.
