In many of the chemical steps in photosynthesis and artificial photosynthesis, proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) plays an essential role. An important issue is how excited state reactivity can be integrated with PCET to carry out solar fuel reactions such as water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen or water reduction of CO ₂ to methanol or hydrocarbons. The principles behind PCET and concerted electron–proton transfer (EPT) pathways are reasonably well understood. Photoacidic and Photobasic Behavior of Transition Metal Compounds with Carboxylic Acid Group(s)

Excited state proton transfer studies of six Ru polypyridyl compounds with carboxylic acid/carboxylate group(s) revealed that some were photoacids and some were photobases. The compounds [Ru ^II(btfmb) ₂(LL)] ²⁺, [Ru ^II(dtb)2(LL)]2+, and [RuII(bpy)2(LL)]2+, where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, btfmb is 4,4'-(CF ₃) ₂-bpy, and dtb is 4,4'-((CH ₃) ₃C) ₂-bpy, and LL is either dcb = 4,4'-(CO ₂H) ₂-bpy or mcb = 4-(CO ₂H),4'-(CO2Et)-2,2'-bpy, were synthesized and characterized. Concerted electron-proton transfer in the optical excitation of hydrogen-bonded dyes

The simultaneous, concerted transfer of electrons and protons—electron-proton transfer (EPT)—is an important mechanism utilized in chemistry and biology to avoid high energy intermediates. There are many examples of thermally activated EPT in ground-state reactions and in excited states following photoexcitation and thermal relaxation. Here we report application of ultrafast excitation with absorption and Raman monitoring to detect a photochemically driven EPT process (photo-EPT). In this process, both electrons and protons are transferred during the absorption of a photon. The role of proton coupled electron transfer in water oxidation

Water oxidation is a key half reaction in energy conversion schemes based on solar fuels and targets such as light driven water splitting or carbon dioxide reduction into CO, other oxygenates, or hydrocarbons. The emitting metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state of fac-[Re{sup I}(bpy)(CO)₃(4,4'-bpy)] ⁺ (1) (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-bpy is 4,4'-bipyridine), [Re ^II(bpy ^–•)(CO)₃(4,4'-bpy)] ^+*, is reductively quenched by 1,4-hydroquinone (H₂Q) in CH₃CN at 23 ± 2 °C by competing pathways to give a common electron–proton-transfer intermediate. In one pathway, electron transfer (ET) quenching occurs to give Re{sup I}(bpy ^–•)(CO)₃(4,4'-bpy)]⁰ with k = (1.8 ± 0.2) × 10⁹ M ^–1 s ^–1, followed by proton transfer from H₂Q to give [Re ^I(bpy)(CO)₃(4,4'-bpyH ^•)] ⁺.
