  • A chemical diffusion model was incorporated into the thermal-hydraulics package of the MELCOR Severe Accident code (Reference 1) for analyzing air ingress events for a very high temperature gas-cooled reactor.
  • During the past ten years, electric utility industry noise abatement activities have focused on quantifying noise emissons from proposed facilities and on abating noise from new facilities. Several studies have been undertaken in order to achieve these goals by the following electric utility organizations: The Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the principal association of investor owned American utilities; Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), an organization founded by American electric utilities to develop and manage a technology program for improving electric power production, distribution and utilization; and the Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation (ESEERCO), a research organization sponsored by the investormore » owned utilities in New York State. Presented in this paper are summaries of several studies sponsored by electric utility industry groups that have contributed to increasing the available information on electric utility noise emissions and the abatement of those emissions.« less
  • Electric utilities have faced increasingly stringent air quality emission control requirements for both new and existing fossil fuel-fired power plants. The decision of which technology or combination of technologies is optimal in complying with an emission reduction retrofit requirement is a complex process. The particular technical issues and economic choices will be site-specific, and may be influenced by political factors as well. The author summarizes the status of those technologies most likely to be considered in any strategy aimed at reducing sulfur dioxide (SO/sub 2/) and nitrogen oxide (NO/sub x/) emissions.   • This paper reports on the high costs and potential liabilities associated with asbestos control that have an impact on electric utilities undertaking power plant refurbishment, retrofit and repowering, other preventive/predictive maintenance, or decommissioning projects. To help utilities effectively manage these issues, EPRI will develop utility guidelines for minimizing asbestos control and replacement costs and liabilities. In addition, EPRI products will include a manual on options for treatment and disposal of asbestos waste, an on-line computerized asbestos replacement information system, and feasibility studies on new asbestos control and replacement products.
  • The necessary future growth in the use of coal to meet U.S. energy requirements will be enhanced by the continued development and use of improved methods for controlling and disposing of waste discharges to the environment. These liquid, gaseous, solid, and thermal wastes, means for treating and controlling waste discharges, and optimal methods for minimizing the environmental impacts of waste discharges are discussed.
