Title: Apparatus and method of controlling the thermal performance of an oxygen-fired boiler

Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of controlling the operation of an oxy-fired boiler; the method comprising combusting a fuel in a boiler; producing a heat absorption pattern in the boiler; discharging flue gases from the boiler; recycling a portion of the flue gases to the boiler; combining a first oxidant stream with the recycled flue gases to form a combined stream; splitting the combined stream into several fractions; and introducing each fraction of the combined stream to the boiler at different points of entry to the boiler.

  • A method and apparatus for achieving efficient utilization of the thermal energy generated by the indoor fan motor of an indoor unit of a reverse cycle air conditioning system is disclosed. A method is provided for dissipating the thermal energy of the fan motor to the indoor air stream when the heat exchanger is in the heating mode of operation and for dissipating such thermal energy to a heat sink when the indoor unit is operated in the cooling mode of operation such that the fan energy may either be added to the amount of heat energy being supplied tomore » the enclosure such that it is not added to the cooling load of the enclosure when the system is operated in the cooling mode.« less
  • A method for controlling an oxygen concentration detection apparatus of an internal combustion engine is described having an exhaust gas passage, which apparatus includes an oxygen concentration sensing element provided in the exhaust gas passage and producing an output signal representing an oxygen concentration in an exhaust gas of the engine and a heater element connected to the oxygen concentration sensing element and operative to heat the oxygen concentration sensing element when a heater current is supplied thereto. The method comprises: a detection step for detecting a temperature of the engine immediately before a start of a supply of themore » heater current; an a control step for controlling a magnitude of the heater current from the start of the supply of the heater current, for a time period which is determined correspondingly to the temperature of the engine detected by the detection step, to be lower than a magnitude of the heater current after an elapse of the time period.« less
  • This invention is an improved method and arrangement for controlling the aerodynamic performance of an axial-flow fluid machine during its operation. In one form of the invention, the improved control is effected by providing the machine with at least one annular row of tandem airfoils, each consisting of a trailing vane and a fixed leading vane. The trailing vane and leading vane of the typical airfoil cooperatively define a gap whose width affects the boundary-layer flow over the airfoil and thus the gas-exist angle of the mainstream flow leaving the airfoil. The trailing vanes are affixed to a ring whichmore » is mounted for independent, arcuate movement about the axis of rotor rotation, so as to translate the trailing vanes circumferentially to alter the widths of their associated gaps. External means are provided for adjusting the position of the ring during operation of the machine in order to vary the gas-exist angles for the row of tandem airfoils and thereby control selected operating characteristics of the machine, such as suction volume or compression ratio.« less
  • Apparatus and method for storing excess thermal energy of a fossil fuel-fired vapor generator during low demand periods and for recovering the stored thermal energy for use during high demand periods. A first moving bed heat exchanger is provided for flowing a bed of refractory particles in heat exchange relation with vapor generator flue gases to receive thermal energy therefrom. At least a portion of the bed of heated refractory particles is stored. A second moving bed heat exchanger is provided for flowing at least a portion of the bed of heated refractory particles in heat exchange relation with amore » fluid to impart thermal energy to the fluid for use.« less
