Title: CEA SMAD 2016 Digitizer Evaluation.

Abstract

Sandia National Laboratories has tested and evaluated an updated SMAD digitizer, developed by the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The SMAD digitizers are intended to record sensor output for seismic and infrasound monitoring applications. The purpose of this digitizer evaluation is to measure the performance characteristics in such areas as power consumption, input impedance, sensitivity, full scale, self-noise, dynamic range, system noise, response, passband, and timing. The SMAD digitizers have been updated since their last evaluation by Sandia to improve their performance when recording at a sample rate of 20 Hz for infrasound applications and 100 Hz for hydro-acoustic seismic stations. This evaluation focuses primarily on the 20 Hz and 100 Hz sample rates. The SMAD digitizers are being evaluated for potential use in the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test- Ban-Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

  • The 7912 is a microprocessor-based recording high-speed digital oscilloscope. The accompanying report details tests conducted as an evaluation of the 7912AD for use in underground nuclear testing, data accuracy, bandwidth, and susceptibility to electromagnetic pulses associated with UGT. Since electromagnetic interference may disrupt the power supply being used for the 7912AD, an evaluation of the machine with regard to brief power losses was conducted. Finally, a theoretical study was made of data recovery time and of the micro-processor-based control system in the 7912.
  • The Seismo-Hydroacoustic Data Acquisition System (SHDAS) is undergoing evaluation in preparation for its engineering, development, and deployment by the U.S Navy as an ocean bottom seismic monitoring system. At the current stage of development, the production digitizers are being evaluated to confirm their performance prior to packaging and assembly for deployment. The testing of the digitizers is being conducted at Delta Group Electronics, the digitizer fabricator, in San Diego, California, performed by Sandia National Laboratories with the assistance of Leidos and Delta Group Electronics.
  • In response to a request from the owner, an investigation was undertaken of possible hazardous working conditions at the Sims Radiator Shop (SIC-3714), Conyers, Georgia. The shop employed three workers, two of whom were mechanics, involved in the cleaning and repairing of automobile and truck radiators. The 8 hour time weighted average lead concentrations for the two mechanics were 80 and 60 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/cu m), both above the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 50 microg/cu m. The blood lead levels of the two mechanics were 30 and 37 micrograms per deciliter (microg/dl), both of which were belowmore » the 40 microg/dl level which requires mandatory testing every 2 months. None of the employees had elevated free erythrocyte protoporphyrin concentrations or any physical symptoms suggestive of lead intoxication. The authors conclude that a potential health hazard existed from overexposures to lead. The authors recommend that activities required by the OSHA lead standard should be carried out to assist in eliminating this hazard. Local exhaust ventilation should be installed at the source of lead fume generation.« less
  • This Tijeras Arroyo Groundwater Current Conceptual Model and Corrective Measures Evaluation Report (CCM/CME Report) has been prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Sandia Corporation (Sandia) to meet requirements under the Sandia National Laboratories-New Mexico (SNL/NM) Compliance Order on Consent (the Consent Order). The Consent Order, entered into by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), DOE, and Sandia, became effective on April 29, 2004. The Consent Order identified the Tijeras Arroyo Groundwater (TAG) Area of Concern (AOC) as an area of groundwater contamination requiring further characterization and corrective action. This report presents an updated Conceptual Site Model (CSM)more » of the TAG AOC that describes the contaminant release sites, the geological and hydrogeological setting, and the distribution and migration of contaminants in the subsurface. The dataset used for this report includes the analytical results from groundwater samples collected through December 2015.« less
