Title: The beam and detector of the NA62 experiment at CERN

Abstract

NA62 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS dedicated to measurements of rare kaon decays. Such measurements, like the branching fraction of the K + → π + ν ν¯ decay, have the potential to bring significant insights into new physics processes when comparison is made with precise theoretical predictions. For this purpose, innovative techniques have been developed, in particular, in the domain of low-mass tracking devices. Detector construction spanned several years from 2009 to 2014. The collaboration started detector commissioning in 2014 and will collect data until the end of 2018. Furthermore, the beam line and detector components are described together with their early performance obtained from 2014 and 2015 data.

abstractNote = {NA62 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS dedicated to measurements of rare kaon decays. Such measurements, like the branching fraction of the K+ → π+ νν¯ decay, have the potential to bring significant insights into new physics processes when comparison is made with precise theoretical predictions. For this purpose, innovative techniques have been developed, in particular, in the domain of low-mass tracking devices. Detector construction spanned several years from 2009 to 2014. The collaboration started detector commissioning in 2014 and will collect data until the end of 2018. Furthermore, the beam line and detector components are described together with their early performance obtained from 2014 and 2015 data.},

  • The physics program of the NA62 experiment aims to search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model by measuring the ratio R{sub K} (GammaK->ev{sub e}(gamma))/GAMMA(K->muv{sub mu}{sub (gamma)}) and studying the ultra rare decay K{sup +}->pi{sup +}vv-bar. The status of the R{sub K} analysis based on approx40% of the data collected during 2007 and 2008 is summarized and the proposed detector layout to measure the branching ratio of the K{sup +}->pi{sup +}vv-bar decay is described.
  • The matrix hodoscope of the OKA experimental setup and a prototype of the hodoscope for the NA62 experiment are described. The design of both hodoscopes is presented. The requirements for the hodoscope prototype are listed, and the efficiency and the time resolution obtained on the basis of experimental data are quoted.
  • The goal of the CERN NA62 experiment is to measure the ultra-rare (Branching Ratio, BR {approx}10{sup -10}) charged kaon decay K{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup +}vv-bar with an accuracy of 10%. The main background, the K{sup +}{yields}{mu}{sup +}v decay (BR {approx}63%), must be suppressed by a rejection factor of 4x10{sup -13}. This can be accomplished using a combination of several methods and detectors. The RICH detector will contribute to this task and will also provide the pion crossing time with a resolution of the order of 100 ps.   • The main goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare K{sup +} → π{sup +} ν ν-bar decay with 10% accuracy. NA62 will use a 750 MHz high-energy un-separated charged hadron beam, with kaons corresponding to ∼6% of the beam, and a kaon decay-in-flight technique. The positive identification of kaons is performed with a differential Cherenkov detector (CEDAR), filled with Nitrogen gas and placed in the incoming beam. To stand the kaon rate (45 MHz average) and meet the performances required in NA62, the Cherenkov detector has been upgraded (KTAG) with newmore » photon detectors, readout, mechanics and cooling systems. The KTAG provides a fast identification of kaons with an efficiency of at least 95% and precise time information with a resolution below 100 ps. A half-equipped KTAG detector has been commissioned during a technical run at CERN in 2012, while the fully equipped detector, its readout and front-end have been commissioned during a pilot run at CERN in October 2014.   • The 4 TPC detectors in the heavy ion experiment NA49 at CERN will allow the reconstruction of particle tracks from lead on lead reactions at 160 GeV/c with a very high acceptance. The read out regions of the detectors will consist of more than 200 thousand pads in their final configuration. To allow the read out of time and amplitude information from this big number of channels a highly integrated system of electronics consisting of preamp-shapers, analog storage and digitization devices, and a vme-board with dsp processors for data reduction has been developed.
