  • The Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics Protein Data Bank (RCSB PDB) resource provides tools for query, analysis and visualization of the 3D structures in the PDB archive. As the mobile Web is starting to surpass desktop and laptop usage, scientists and educators are beginning to integrate mobile devices into their research and teaching. In response, we have developed the RCSB PDB Mobile app for the iOS and Android mobile platforms to enable fast and convenient access to RCSB PDB data and services.   • A computerized analysis and reporting system was developed for personnel involved in effluent monitoring operations at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc. for the United States Department of Energy under contract DE-AC05-84OR21400. SAS/ACCESS{reg sign} interface to Rdb/VMS{reg sign}, SAS/BASE{reg sign}, SAS/GRAPH{reg sign}, SAS{reg sign} BATCH, the macro facility, and some aspects of Digital Command Language (DCL{trademark}) were utilized in the development of the reporting and analysis system. This system essentially contains three modules, each of which has its own function. The basic functions include the creation of monthly reports for easy perusal for excursions;more » run charts of the observational laboratory data; and a nonparametric trend analysis of monthly summary values, which involves the computation of the Mann-Kendall test for slope. Digital Control Language is utilized to pass user supplied parameters to individual SAS{reg sign} programs within each module and the SASBATCH command is used to regulate time consuming programs to a batch queue.« less
  • Argonne National Laboratory was tasked with developing a data interface between the Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS), a military simulation model, and the Warrior Preparation Center C{sup 3}I reporting system, an Ingres-based application. The problem was to build an application that could take buffered input/output (I/O) from the simulation and trade it for direct I/O into an Ingres database. At the same time, the database could have up to 100 concurrent users through the C{sup 3}I reporting system, making retrievals and generating reports, so lock contention had to be minimized. One advantage was that events did not have to bemore » reported immediately. Rather, delays in data updates were desired to emulate reporting delays that occur in the real world. Because of the massive amount of state information generated by time series simulations, a single interface could not maintain the database. Therefore, the problem was partitioned among several processes. One process separated the stream, and others maintained the database with state data from the simulation. A number of specific features in the application are reviewed that may be of interest to other developers faced with the problem of developing applications that have a large transaction throughput.« less
