Title: Power-electronic, variable-speed wind turbine development: 1988--1993. A summary of the 33M-VS wind turbine development program conducted by KENETECH windpower, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, and EPRI. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:137176

Between 1989 and 1993, a utility/industry consortium sponsored a five- year variable-speed wind turbine development program that culminated in an advanced wind turbine the 33M-VS. This document describes the variable-speed wind turbine development program from its conception through the completion of field testing and the introduction of the new commercial turbine. Key design decisions that led to the new technology are highlighted and overviews of both the mechanical and electrical designs of the turbine are included. The economic and technical issues of building a wind power plant using the 33M-VS turbine are discussed. The document is intended for utility managers wishing to understand the development process for the KENETECH Windpower 33M-VS machine.
