  • This book is the first of three volumes generated from a conference on the environment and safety aspects of the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. This volume presents papers on environmental and safety regulations, methods for developing safety programs, hazardous operations/training regulations, and management planning strategies to meet these regulations. Papers discuss remediation of contaminated sites, emergency response planning, pending and developing regulations, and waste management practices.
  • This three-volume report contains papers presented at the conference. The papers are printed in the order of their presentation in each session and describe progress and results of programs in nuclear safety research conducted in this country and abroad. Foreign participation in the meeting included papers presented by researchers from France, Japan, Norway, and Russia. The titles of the papers and the names of the authors have been updated and may differ from those that appeared in the final program of the meeting.   • There is growing interest in the environmental, health, and safety issues related to new photovoltaic technologies as they approach commercialization. Such issues include potential toxicity of II-VI compounds; the impacts of new environmental regulations on module manufacturers; and, the need for recycling of spent modules and manufacturing wastes. This paper will review these topics.
  • Historically, society in general and the mining community in particular have very often used the results of major catastrophes such as mine fires, explosions, and inundations to characterize the mining industry`s health and safety record. One doesn`t have to travel too far back in time to recall the ore pass failure which occurred at the Magma Copper Mining Company in 1993, killing four miners and the South Mountain Coal Company`s No. 3 Mine explosion in 1992, which took the lives of eight miners. Both are still fresh in the public`s collective mind. These events, due to the amount of localmore » and national media coverage that they generated, help to define in the minds of many individuals what are perceived to be the prevalent health and safety hazards in the mining industry. Fortunately, these traumatic events are becoming more the exception than the norm. The mining industry has made tremendous strides in minimizing the potential for mine disasters and they are to be commended for this accomplishment.« less
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) regulation applies mainly to chemical and oil companies, plus other industries such as food processing, and paper production. It covers plants that deal with any of about 130 toxic chemicals in quantities above thresholds limits in Appendix A of PSM standard or flammable liquids and gases in quantities greater than 10,000 pounds. The State Consultation PSM teams (North and South) use a detailed audit checklist featuring above elements for audit of facilities requesting PSM assistance. The audit focuses on three generic activities: records, onsite conditions, and interviews. Records include written programs that outline the requirements andmore » documentation of completion. Onsite conditions are implementation of activities specified in written programs. Interviews are for evaluation of transferred information to the workers that are already developed in written programs and training programs.« less
