  • Sedimentation of a suspension of particles under the action of gravity has been studied extensively due to its importance in practical applications such as oil sands extraction, solid-liquid separation, particle size measurement, dewatering of coal slurries, clarification of waste water, and processing of drilling and mining fluids containing rocks and mineral particles of various sizes. Creaming behavior of oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by kaolinite clays was studied here. The clays were treated with asphaltenes resulting in clays having different contact angles. It was found that the emulsion creaming velocity decreased and that the volume of the creamed emulsions increased with increasingmore » clay concentration at the oil droplet surface. At a given initial clay concentration in the aqueous phase, a plot of the emulsion creaming velocity versus the square of the oil droplet diameter did not follow any rational hindered settling equation. At a constant clay concentration at the oil droplet surface, however, a plot of the emulsion creaming velocity versus the square of the effective oil droplet diameter gave a straight line passing through the origin. A model for creaming of solids-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions was developed, and it is able to predict the creaming velocity of the emulsions quite well.« less
  • A process useful for breaking oil in water emulsions produced as the result of a surfactant flood oil recovery project is disclosed. The produced oil in water emulsion, stabilized with surfactants, content is treated with brine and a polyol or quaternary ammonium compound, or both, followed by mixing and settling to form a sprung oil phase and a brine phase.
  • The electrically induced coalescence of water-in-oil emulsions stabilized by interfacially active fractions from crude oils has been studied by means of time domain dielectric spectroscopy at high electric fields. The experiments were designed with a 2{sup 7-3} reduced factorial design. Regression analysis clearly shows that the choice of organic solvent and the amount of asphaltenes, as well as the interplay between these variables, are the most significant parameters for determining the stability of these emulsions. It should be pointed out that the asphaltenes were the only surface active fraction tested. No interplay between, for instance, asphaltenes and resins was investigated.more » The nonlinearity found in the regression analysis is explained by different aggregation states of asphaltenes in aliphatic and aromatic solvents. The influence of the variables upon the emulsion stability is discussed.« less
  • In the Purex process, a solvent extraction method of nuclear fuel reprocessing, a stable emulsion called crud forms at the interface between the oil and water phases. This paper reports that crud is an emulsion stabilized by finely dispersed solids. Insoluble residues and precipitates of zirconium and radiation-degraded products of tributyl phosphate (TBP) are key materials in crud formation. Cruds formed by precipitates of zirconium and TBP degradation products, such as di-n-butyl phosphate (HDBP), mono-n-butyl phosphate (H{sub 2}MBP), and phosphoric acid (H{sub 3}PO{sub 4}) are studied. Experimental results show that the precipitate of zirconium and HDBP is not effective inmore » stabilizing emulsions. However, the refractory complex of zirconium and H{sub 3}PO{sub 4} is an important material for stabilizing an oil-in-water emulsion in a solution with or without uranium. Moreover, it is shown that the complex of zirconium and H{sub 2}MBP has a significant role in stabilizing a water-in-oil emulsion, especially when uranium is also present.« less
