Title: Press Oil Final Release Survey

Abstract

There are forty-eight 55 gallon barrels filled with hydraulic oil that are candidates for release and recycle. This oil needs to be characterized prior to release. Principles of sampling as provided in MARSAME/MARSSIM approaches were used as guidance for sampling.

  • The NRC's Astronomy and Astrophysics decadal survey Astro2010 was organized under the umbrella of the BPA and its sister board the Space Studies Board (SSB). NASA, NSF, and DOE are the sponsors of this survey that was asked to evaluate the field of space- and ground-based astronomy and astrophysics, recommending priorities for the most important scientific and technical activities of the decade 2010-2020. The principal goals of this study were to carry out an assessment of activities in astronomy and astrophysics, including both new and previously identified concept, and to prepare a concise report that addresses the agencies supporting themore » field, the Congressional committees with jurisdiction over those agencies, the scientific community, and the public. Over the past 40 years, the Astronomy and Astrophysics decadal reviews have played a vital role in the selection of major astronomical activities and subsequent scientific discoveries. Some decadal survey prioritization highlights include the development of adaptive optics systems, the Very Long Baseline Array, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.« less
  • Worker exposures and chemical releases associated with a plate-and-frame filter press and a stationary tray dryer were studied in a pilot plant. The equipment was representative of those in a chemical manufacturing plant; the filter press was previously used at a chemical plant, and the dryer trays were the same size used by dye manufacturers. A randomized series of eight experiments identified the most influential variables for inhalation exposure during the tray drying unit operation which used approximately 100 kg of CaCO3. The range of conditions studied in the eight experiments provide inhalation exposure data for evaluating the impact ofmore » physical properties, the activities performed, and the influence of worker technique.« less
  • A survey of formaldehyde (CH/sub 2/O) release from durable-press apparel textiles has been performed to better characterize the CH/sub 2/O emission properties of fabrics marketed in the US. An intercomparison of the ORNL extraction, the Japanese standard and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) sealed jar methods using 12 fabrics selected from the textile survey yielded an average emission ratio of 0.46 +- 0.16 for the ORNL/AATCC methods and 1.5 +- 0.5 for the ORNL/Japenese methods. The average CH/sub 2/O releases from the survey fabrics, as measured with the ORNL extraction test, were 117 +- 140, 58more » +- 72, 19 +- 17 and 31 +- 29 ..mu..g CH/sub 2/O/g fabric for top-weight, bottom-weight, knit and flatgood categories, respectively. Formaldehyde releases of <100 ..mu..g CH/sub 2/O/g fabric were measured from 86% of the survey fabrics. Three to fourfold increases in CH/sub 2/O release were observed with additional seven to nine weeks of storage in a laboratory environment between repeated testing using the ORNL extraction test. The strongest emitting fabrics with initial emission levels of >125 ..mu..g CH/sub 2/O/g fabric exhibited a 74 +- 11% decline in CH/sub 2/O emission levels following the first washing, with an additional 13 +- 6% decline after the completion of six further washings. The weakest emitting fabrics with initial emission levels of <25 ..mu..g CH/sub 2/O/g fabric demonstrated both increases and decreases in CH/sub 2/O emission strength after washing but never exceeded 11 ..mu..g CH/sub 2/O/g fabric.« less
  • The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Grand Junction Office (GJO) occupies a 61.7-acre facility along the Gunnison River near Grand Junction, Colorado. This site was contaminated with uranium ore concentrates and mill tailings during vanadium refining activities of the Manhattan Engineer District, and during sampling, assaying, pilot milling, storage, and brokerage activities conducted for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission`s domestic uranium procurement program. The DOE Defense Decontamination and Decommissioning Program established the GJO Remedial Action Project (GJORAP) to clean up and restore the facility lands, improvements, and underlying aquifer. WASTREN-Grand Junction is the site contractor for the facility and themore » remedial action contractor for GJORAP. Building 30B and the underlying soil were found not to be radiologically contaminated; therefore, the building can be released for unrestricted use. Placards have been placed at the building entrances indicating the completion of the radiological release survey and prohibiting the introduction of any radioactive materials within the building without written approvals from the GJO Facilities Operations Manager. This document was prepared in response to a DOE-GJO request for an individual final release report for each GJO building.« less
