In this study, we demonstrate how small and rapid temperature perturbations (produced by the indirect laser-induced temperature jump (ILIT) technique) of solid metal electrode|electrolyte solution interfaces may be used to determine the potential of zero (total) charge (E_pzc) and its temperature derivative $$$$\left(\frac{dEpzc}{dT}\right)$$$$ of Au(111) electrode surfaces modified by alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers in contact with high ionic strength (i.e., 1.0 M) aqueous electrolyte solutions. Potential dependent surface relaxation of the Pt(001)/electrolyte interface

X-ray reflectivity measurements were used to determine the structure of the Pt(001)/solution interface as a function of the applied potential in alkaline and acid electrolytes. Unlike the Pt(001)/vacuum interface, the electrolyte interface was found to be unreconstructed at all potentials. The lattice spacing between the first and second layer was found to be a funciton of potential in the region where approximately a monolayer of H was adsorbed. The expansion was up to 2.5% of a lattice spacing (0.05 A) in alkaline electrolyte, and up to 1% of a lattice spacing in acid electrolytes.

The acid-base properties of oxides are an important characteristic of oxide phases, which allows one to predict their catalytic activity and adsorption behavior. There are various methods of determining acid-base equilibrium constants, based on IR spectroscopy, radioactive tracer techniques, adsorption, calorimetry, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Recent investigations showed that potentiometric titration is an effective technique for determining acid-base equilibrium constants.
