  • An approach applied to photovoltaic (PV) technologies is described. Its relationship to consensus standards organizations is described and the status of private-sector standards development activities is reported. 5 refs.
  • Serving as interim technical assistance contractor to the DOE's Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project Office, Sandia National Laboratories assists the Project Office in directing and monitoring technology development programs directed toward assuring compliance with EPA standards for tailings disposal. This paper summarizes progress to date in the areas of cover technology, liner technology and conditioning technology. The presently proposed EPA standards for tailings disposal include very stringent specifications for long-term stability, radon exhalation and groundwater contamination. These standards are now under review, and some relaxation appears likely. The author offers purely personal speculations as to the content of themore » revised standards and their effect on the technology development program.« less
  • Distributed energy resources can provide power to local loads in the electric distribution system and benefits such as improved reliability. Microgrids are intentional islands formed at a facility or in an electrical distribution system that contains at least one distributed resource and associated loads. Microgrids that operate both electrical generation and loads in a coordinated manner can offer additional benefits to the customer and local utility. The loads and energy sources can be disconnected from and reconnected to the area or local utility with minimal disruption to the local loads, thereby improving reliability. This paper details the development and testingmore » of a highspeed static switch for distributed energy and microgrid applications.« less
