Title: Apparatus and method for using radar to evaluate wind flow fields for wind energy applications

Abstract

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for obtaining data to determine one or more characteristics of a wind flow field using one or more radars. Data is collected from the one or more radars, and analyzed to determine the one or more characteristics of the wind flow field. The one or more radars are positioned to have a portion of the wind flow field within a scanning sector of the one or more radars.

  • The present invention provides a system and method for obtaining data to determine one or more characteristics of a wind field using a first remote sensing device and a second remote sensing device. Coordinated data is collected from the first and second remote sensing devices and analyzed to determine the one or more characteristics of the wind field. The first remote sensing device is positioned to have a portion of the wind field within a first scanning sector of the first remote sensing device. The second remote sensing device is positioned to have the portion of the wind field disposedmore » within a second scanning sector of the second remote sensing device.« less
  • Electric fields for electrostatic optics for focusing or otherwise controlling beams of ions, electrons and charged particles in general can be produced by surface current distributions which flow on appropriately shaped and located resistive elements from electrical power sources of appropriate voltage connected to two or more points or regions of the resistive surfaces; the resulting electric fields in the proximity of the current carrying surfaces are parallel to these surfaces. Useful electric field configurations may be produced which are inconvenient or impossible to produce by the prior art using surface charge distributions. New and improved analyzers of concentric hemispheremore » and parallel plate types are specifically utilized for ion kinetic energy selection prior to measurement of the mass-to-charge ratio of secondary ions produced by primary ion bombardment of surfaces.« less
  • A vertical shaft, attached to a windmill, rotates inside a first container which has a highly viscous fluid contained in it. A first set of perforated ribs extend radially outwards from the shaft. A second set of perforated ribs extend radially inwards from the first container. The two sets of ribs are vertically staggered with respect to each other so that when the shaft rotates, the first set of ribs do not come into physical contact with the second set of ribs. As the shaft rotates, the shearing action between the two sets of ribs forces the viscous fluid throughmore » the perforations in the two sets of ribs. This results in a pressure drop between the entrance and exit end of each perforation. The pressure drop results in heat dissipation in the viscous fluid. The viscous fluid is thereby heated. A second vessel containing water surrounds the first vessel. Heat transfer occurs across the first vessel to the water, thereby raising its temperature. A projecting arm attached to the shaft dips in the water, and, while rotating with the shaft, increases the heat transfer from the viscous fluid to water.« less
  • An apparatus is described for measuring a ratio of a mass flow rate of a pipeline gas flowing through a pipeline compared to a mass flow rate of a sample gas tapped from the pipeline, the pipeline having a first device means for producing a pipeline gas pressure differential, the apparatus comprising: a second device means for producing a sample gas pressure differential while maintaining the sample gas at substantially the same temperature as the pipeline gas; means for routing the sample gas to the second device means; means for measuring the pipeline gas pressure differential as the pipeline gasmore » flows through the first device means; means for measuring the sample gas pressure differential as the sample gas flows through the second device means; a flow controlling means located downstream of the second device means for maintaining a sample gas flow rate through the second device means independent of the pipeline gas pressure differential; and a control means for comparing the sample gas pressure differential with the pipeline gas pressure differential in order to obtain the mass flow rate ratio. A method is described for using the above apparatus.« less
  • The invention relates to apparatus for and method of generating electricity from wind energy. The method comprises operations corresponding to the means, viz., producing an electrostatic field in the open through which wind can blow, generating charged particles to be entrained in and carried by the wind against the direction of movement imposed on the particles by the field, resulting in an increase of the charged particles and making the increased potential available for utilization.
