Title: SCES2016 Summary: Experiment

Abstract

Experimental results presented during the 2016 International Conference on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems (SECS2016) not only reflect the breadth of topics being explored in the field of strongly correlated systems but also the remarkable progress in discovery and understanding that is being made from their study. Lastly, this brief summary highlights just a few of the exciting experimental developments discussed at SCES2016.

  • The authors provide an overview of the objectives, operation, and findings of the Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange Project (STEP). This project had two main objectives. First was to study the mechanisms and exchange rates associated with the exchange of mass, gases, and aerosols between the troposphere and stratosphere. Second was to try to explain the extreme dryness observed in stratospheric air masses. This series of studies comprises the STEP Tropical Experiment, which was carried out in January and February, 1987. Most data was collected by a high flying ER-2 aircraft, outfitted with an array of data collection instrumentation. This experiment found themore » driest air just at or above the cloud tops, and in conjunction with other measurements concludes that temperatures, and ice crystal growth and transport contribute to local dehydration in these cloud systems. Significant convection is also evident in the clouds. Temperatures at the top of the monsoonal clouds, and their height contribute to mixing dry air into the lower stratosphere.« less
  • In a summary of previous experiments conducted in plastic enclosures Menzel (1977) pointed out that the initial effects of pollutants on the biota appeared similar regardless of the pollutant tested. His remarks were based largely on a series of experiments performed in small enclosures (68 m/sup 3/) for periods up to 30 days. The papers included in this and the preceding issue of this journal document the reactions to mercury of plankton communities maintained in 1300 m/sup 3/ plastic enclosures for a period of 72 days.
  • Because of the concern for growth of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instabilities, surfaces of targets for implosion experiments must be exceptionally smooth. The 100 A surface smoothness requirement could be conservative, expensive insurance against RT instabilities. Will instabilities grow at 500 or 1000 A surface smoothness. What are the approaches to minimize the RT instability effects. The present RT experiments are designed to answer some of these questions. The authors approach to the problem has been to fabricate planar targets with known defects so that their performance can be compared with theoretical predictions. Since it is difficult to make theoretical calculations formore » a point defect, their RT experiments are designed to test continuous, single-frequency sinusoidal defects of various wavelengths and peak-to-valley heights.« less
  • This paper presents a brief summary of the flight results for the Cryogenic Two-Phase Flight Experiment (CRYOTP). This experiment was a Hitchhiker-based payload that flew on the space shuttle Columbia in March of 1994 (STS-62). CRYOTP tested two new technologies for advanced cryogenic thermal control; the Space Heat Pipe (SHP), which was a constant conductance cryogenic heat pipe, and the Brilliant Eyes Thermal Storage Unit (BETSU), which was a cryogenic phase-change thermal storage device. Both devices were tested independently during the mission. Analysis of the flight data indicated that the SHP was unable to start in either of two attempts,more » due to a supercritical startup limit related to the wall material thermal conductivity, parasitic heat leaks, and cryocooler capacity. The BETSU test article was successfully operated with more than 250 hours of on-orbit testing including several cooldown cycles and 56 freeze/thaw cycles. Some degradation was observed with the five tactical cryocoolers used as thermal sinks, and one of the cryocoolers failed completely after 331 hours of operation. Post-flight analysis indicated that this problem was most likely due to failure of an electrical controller internal to the unit. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}« less
