Parallel algorithms for photon transport Monte Carlo

Parallel algorithms have been developed for photon transport Monte Carlo analysis. The first algorithm (PSPHOT) is intended for multiple scalar processors and the second (PVPHOT) is intended for multiple vector processors. These codes are parallel versions of the scalar and vector codes SPHOT and VPHOT, which analyze photon transport in a two-dimensional Lagrangian mesh. Peak parallelization efficiencies have been predicted for PSPHOT on the IBM 3090 (Sierra) and for PVPHOT on the Cray X/MP by simulating their operation on the corresponding uniprocessor. In addition, actual timing results from a dedicated run on the two-processor IBM 3090/200 have been obtained formore » PSPHOT.« less
Implementation of a Monte Carlo algorithm for neutron transport on a massively parallel SIMD machine

We present some results from the recent adaptation of a vectorized Monte Carlo algorithm to a massively parallel architecture. The performance of the algorithm on a single processor Cray Y-MP and a Thinking Machine Corporations CM-2 and CM-200 is compared for several test problems. The results show that significant speedups are obtainable for vectorized Monte Carlo algorithms on massively parallel machines, even when the algorithms are applied to realistic problems which require extensive variance reduction. However, the architecture of the Connection Machine does place some limitations on the regime in which the Monte Carlo algorithm may be expected to performmore » well.« less

Monte Carlo calculations of hole transport in bulk zincblende phase of GaN including a pseudopotential calculated band structure

In this paper, the authors present ensemble Monte Carlo based calculations of the steady state hole transport properties, i.e. average energy, drift velocity, and band occupancy of zincblende GaN. The Monte Carlo calculation includes the full details of the balance bands and a numerically determined scattering rate derived from an empirical pseudopotential calculation. Calculations are made for electric field strengths up to 1,000 kV/cm. It is found that the average hole energies are much lower than the corresponding electron energies as comparable electric field strengths, and that some anisotropy in the drift velocity and average energy appears at the highermore » fields examined here.« less
