Title: Backstroke

Abstract

This tool takes as input arbitrary C++ code and generates C++ code that is instrumented with additional function calls such that the program state can be restored to checkpoints in the execution. Since the execution of the generated program can be reverted to a previous state in its execution, is also called to be reversible C++. The package consists of the Backstroke tool and its accompanying Backstroke library, which is linked with the instrumented code. It is used a LLNL in the context of optimistic parallel discrete event simulation where program reversibility is necessary to support optimistic simulation(in contrast to conservative simulation). Without Backstroke the reversible code must be written by hand.
