  • {sup 40}Ca+{sup 40,48}Ca,{sup 46}Ti reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon have been studied using the 4{pi} CHIMERA detector. An isospin effect on the competition between fusionlike and binarylike reaction mechanisms has been observed. The probability of producing a heavy residue is lower in the case of N{approx_equal}Z colliding systems as compared to the case of reactions induced on the neutron rich {sup 48}Ca target. Predictions based on constrained molecular dynamics II calculations show that the competition between fusionlike and binary reactions in the selected centrality bins can constrain the parametrization of the symmetry energy and its density dependence in the nuclear equationmore » of state.« less
  • Starting with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation in density matrix form, we investigate the macroscopic description of the dynamics of the nuclear fluid involving the spin and isospin degrees of freedom, in conjunction with the presence of only central exchange interactions. The time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation can be cast into a set of conservation laws of the classical type coupling spin and isospin densities. With simple zero-range interactions, we obtain the normal modes of density propagations and the corresponding speeds of sound waves. In addition to the normal sound waves in which the total density varies with space and time, there aremore » the spin sound waves in which the difference of the spin-up and the spin-down densities varies with space and time, the isospin sound waves in which the difference of neutron and proton densities varies with space and time, and finally, the spin-isospin sound waves in which the difference of the ''parallel'' spin and isospin densities and the ''antiparallel'' spin and isospin densities varies with space and time. It is found that for a zero-range interaction whose density dependence is of the type t/sub 3/(1 + P/sup B/) ndelta (r/sub 1/ - r/sub 2/)/6, the speeds of spin sound a/sub 2/, isospin sound a/sub 3/ and spin-isospin sound a/sub 4/ satisfy a/sub 2/ /sup 2/ + a/sub 3/ /sup 2/ = 2a/sub 4/ /sup 2/. With the parameters of Golin and Zamick and Vautherin and Brink, we have in addition a/sub 3/ > a/sub 4/ > a/sub 2/, the numerical values of a/sub 2/, a/sub 3/, and a/sub 4/ being in the range of 0.17 to 0.27c.« less
