  • Angular and energy correlations have been measured for ..cap alpha.. particles emitted in coincidence with projectilelike fragments from deeply inelastic collisions of 204-MeV /sup 16/O with /sup 93/Nb. Anisotropic emission of fast ..cap alpha.. particles is observed; however, the main results of this and similar experiments can be reproduced by model calculations which assume the ..cap alpha.. particles are evaporated from fully accelerated fragments and take the angular distribution of projectilelike fragments into account.
  • Angular and energy distributions were measured for the reaction products from the /sup 8/6Kr + /sup 1/39La reaction at 505, 610, and 710 MeV bombarding energies. The elastic scattering data were analyzed to extract information about the conservative potential. The strength of the potential for separations close to the strong absorption radius is in agreement with a number of theoretical potentials including the proximity potential. Contour plots of the cross section for nonelastic reaction products as a function of angle and exit channel total kinetic energy for the 505 and 610 MeV bombardments exhibit two branches, similar to the behaviormore » previously observed at 710 MeV. These results reveal no sharp energy dependence of the character of the deflection function, implying that the Z/sub 1/Z/sub 2/ product of the target and projectile system is more important than the bombarding energy in determining the orbits of the reacting nuclei. Upper limits to the fusion cross sections at all energies are less than 25% of the total reaction cross section. Calculations of the energy loss expected on the basis of a one-body proximity friction arising from particle exchange give an energy loss which is less than one-half of the observed energy loss.« less
  • It is pointed out within the context of parton and resonance models that identical physics governs the threshold regions of seemingly distinct inclusive spectra. For example, the threshold region of nu W/sub 2/ and the edge of the current fragmentation region of deeply inelastic reactions share ideniical descriptions. This idea is made explicit within the context of an intuitive quark-parton model in which only ordinary hadrons are produced as the result of deeply inelastic collisions. The properties of the distribution in momentum space of these hadrons are discussed and a realization of Rjorken's correspondence method is obtained. Relations between themore » shape of the hadron spectrum near the edge of the current fragmentaiion region, Regge intercepts, and the asymptotic falloff of elastic and transition form factors emerge.
