Title: Energy storage systems having an electrode comprising Li.sub.xS.sub.y

Abstract

Improved lithium-sulfur energy storage systems can utilizes Li.sub.xS.sub.y as a component in an electrode of the system. For example, the energy storage system can include a first electrode current collector, a second electrode current collector, and an ion-permeable separator separating the first and second electrode current collectors. A second electrode is arranged between the second electrode current collector and the separator. A first electrode is arranged between the first electrode current collector and the separator and comprises a first condensed-phase fluid comprising Li.sub.xS.sub.y. The energy storage system can be arranged such that the first electrode functions as a positive or a negative electrode.

  • An improved rechargeable, high-energy-density electrochemical cell comprises an anode, an electrolyte of an ionic salt dissolved in an aprotic organic solvent, and a composite cathode structure of a cathode-active material and a metal. The metal reacts with the cathode-active material to form on the metal an impervious conductive film of a mixture of compounds of the cathode-active material and the metal; this film remains impervious during both charging and discharging. A specific example includes a rechargeable, high-energy-density battery consisting of a lithium anode, an electrolyte of lithium perchlorate dissolved in dioxolane, and a cathode of titanium disulfide and aluminum.
  • The cathode described has a grid of ..beta..-Ti--Mo--Zr alloy (>75% Ti). The grid has a nonpolarizing gold coating covered with the active lead oxide. The method of fabrication is discussed. TiOSO/sub 4/ was added to improve lifetime and localized attack. (RWR)
  • Electrolytes for Mg-based energy storage devices can be formed from non-nucleophilic Mg.sup.2+ sources to provide outstanding electrochemical performance and improved electrophilic susceptibility compared to electrolytes employing nucleophilic sources. The instant electrolytes are characterized by high oxidation stability (up to 3.4 V vs Mg), improved electrophile compatibility and electrochemical reversibility (up to 100% coulombic efficiency). Synthesis of the Mg.sup.2+ electrolytes utilizes inexpensive and safe magnesium dihalides as non-nucleophilic Mg.sup.2+ sources in combination with Lewis acids, MR.sub.aX.sub.3-a (for 3.gtoreq.a.gtoreq.1). Furthermore, addition of free-halide-anion donors can improve the coulombic efficiency of Mg electrolytes from nucleophilic or non-nucleophilic Mg.sup.2+ sources.
  • A fluid supply system for a rotary cutter head of mining machines comprises a plurality of nozzles for directing air flow inducing sprays in the vicinity of the cutter head, and sensor means for sensing a preselected operational condition of the fluid supply to the nozzles and for deriving a signal indicative of the sensed preselected condition.
