Title: Method for maximizing the brightness of the bunches in a particle injector by converting a highly space-charged beam to a relativistic and emittance-dominated beam

Abstract

A method for maximizing the brightness of the bunches in a particle injector by converting a highly space-charged beam to a relativistic and emittance-dominated beam. The method includes 1) determining the bunch charge and the initial kinetic energy of the highly space-charge dominated input beam; 2) applying the bunch charge and initial kinetic energy properties of the highly space-charge dominated input beam to determine the number of accelerator cavities required to accelerate the bunches to relativistic speed; 3) providing the required number of accelerator cavities; and 4) setting the gradient of the radio frequency (RF) cavities; and 5) operating the phase of the accelerator cavities between -90 and zero degrees of the sinusoid of phase to simultaneously accelerate and bunch the charged particles to maximize brightness, and until the beam is relativistic and emittance-dominated.

  • Methods and devices enable coupling of a charged particle beam to a radio frequency quadrupole accelerator. Coupling of the charged particle beam is accomplished, at least in-part, by relying on of sensitivity of the input phase space acceptance of the radio frequency quadrupole to the angle of the input charged particle beam. A first electric field across a beam deflector deflects the particle beam at an angle that is beyond the acceptance angle of the radio frequency quadrupole. By momentarily reversing or reducing the established electric field, a narrow portion of the charged particle beam is deflected at an anglemore » within the acceptance angle of the radio frequency quadrupole. In another configuration, beam is directed at an angle within the acceptance angle of the radio frequency quadrupole by the first electric field and is deflected beyond the acceptance angle of the radio frequency quadrupole due to the second electric field.« less
  • This patent describes a method for obtaining a self-colliding beam of charged particles operating above the space charge limit, comprising the following steps; (a) reducing the pressure within a vacuum zone means to a pressure less than 10/sup -8/ torr; (b) injecting a beam of charged particles within a magnetic field inside the vacuum zone means; (c) dissociating the beam of charged particles; (d) containing the dissociated beam of charged particles in a magnetic field formed by a superconducting magnet means having a mirror ratio greater than 1, so that the dissociated beam of charged particles is trapped within themore » magnetic field in self-colliding orbits; (e) neutralizing the dissociated beam of charged particles within an electrostatic stabilizing means comprising at least one pair of electrostatic grids placed perpendicular to the magnetic field with negative potential applied to each grid; and, (f) stabilizing the neutralized, dissociated self colliding beam of charged particles with the electrostatic stabilizing means, so that the stored charged particle density and the charged particle confinement time is increased above the space charge limit, which further increases the number of collisions between the charged particles in the self-colliding beam of charged particles.« less
