Hydrogen bonding and the liquid-to-glass transition in n-propanol at high pressures
- Univ. of Toledo, OH (United States)
The simple alcohols are a system of interest since they display both hydrogen bonding and a pressure-induced liquid-to-glass transition. The authors have studied both phenomena via Raman scattering from n-propanol at room temperature. High pressures were generated with a miniature Merrill-Bassett diamond anvil cell. Due to hydrogen bonding, the frequency of the O-H stretching mode decreases as the pressure on the sample is increased. The pressure derivative of this mode is a measure of the rate of increase of the degree of hydrogen bonding. A discontinuity in the pressure dependence of the 860 cm{sup {minus}1} mode and other changes in the Raman spectra indicate that the liquid-to-glass transition occurs at about 5.5 GPa.
