In-line electrical sensors for monitoring thermoset curing part I: In-situ electrical studies of PMR-15 network formation
- Universite Claude Bernard, Lyon (France); and others
Interactive polymerization concept based on electrical measurements seems to be a convenient approach to monitor in the in-situ complex polymerization of PMR-15 resin. This experimental work was first carried out on model compounds. Taking into account the physico-chemical characterization of this thermoset polyimide, we have shown the ability of this technology to detect the main chemical and physical events occurring during the polymerization process, e.g. imidization, prepolymer glass transition, crosslinking reaction and finally glass transition of the crosslinked network. Otherwise, we also propose a new approach to follow polymerization using electrical measurements derived from dc voltage steps solicitation. The applicability of these electrical measurements to evaluate the viscosity behavior of the reactive system during an industrial processing cure was also reported.
