  • The discomfort caused by the cold air overspill from vertical refrigerated display cases in supermarkets is widely accepted as being a problem to customers. This, together with the adverse effect on case performance caused by heat and moisture transfer across the air curtain, suggests that there may be room for improvement in the design and fundamental operation of these display fixtures. This paper presents a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a vertical dairy display case that could be used in the design and optimization of such equipment. Comparisons are also made with experimentally obtained values of velocity andmore » temperature measured around the case in order to assess the accuracy and viability of such a model. Parameters of the computer model, such as the size of the calculation grid, the turbulence model, and the discretization scheme, were also varied to determine their effect on the converged solution, and these results are presented. The CFD model showed good qualitative agreement with measured values and requires only fine tuning to make it quantitatively accurate.« less
  • This paper discusses a test to evaluate the impact of low-emissivity aluminum shields on the power use and thermal performance of a multi-deck display case typically used in supermarkets for storing dairy products. The refrigerating system's critical temperature and pressure points were tracked during the test, and the readings were then utilized to quantify various heat transfer and power-related parameters of the refrigeration cycle. It was found that using shields for extended hours of operation provides the most reduction in refrigeration load and power use.
  • The feedwater flowrate that is measured by Venturi flow meters in most pressurized water reactors can be over-measured because of the fouling phenomena that make corrosion products accumulate in the Venturi meters. Therefore, in this work, two kinds of methods, a support vector regression method and a fuzzy modeling method, combined with a sequential probability ratio test, are used in order to accurately estimate online the feedwater flowrate, and also to monitor the status of the existing hardware sensors. Also, the data for training the support vector machines and the fuzzy model are selected by using a subtractive clustering schememore » to use informative data from among all acquired data. The proposed inferential sensing and monitoring algorithm is verified by using the acquired real plant data of Yonggwang Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3. In the simulations, it was known that the root mean squared error and the relative maximum error are so small and the proposed method early detects the degradation of an existing hardware sensor.   • This paper reports on results of investigations to identify and quantify the effect of in-store environmental conditions on frost accumulation on the evaporator coils of open multideck refrigerated display cabinets. Field and environmental chamber-based tests have shown that both ambient relative humidity and temperature of a store have a significant effect on the rate of frost formation on the evaporator coils, with the effect of relative humidity being much more pronounced than the effect of temperature. In supermarkets where a fixed-time defrost control strategy is employed, it is possible that cabinets are defrosted too infrequently at high relative humidities, resultingmore » in high product temperatures, and too frequently at low relative humidities, resulting in excessive energy consumption. Considerable opportunity exists for the application of more sophisticated defrost control strategies, both to save energy and improve temperature control.« less
  • This paper provides an overview of the DOE Oak Ridge Operations Remote Sensing Program and discusses how data from this program have assisted the environmental restoration program in streamlining site-characterization activities. Three case studies are described where remote sensing imagery has provided a more focused understanding of site problems with a resultant reduction in the need for costly and time-consuming, ground-based sampling approaches.
