Title: Broad spectrum antibiotic compounds and use thereof

Abstract

The discovery of a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) gene cluster in the genome of Clostridium thermocellum that produces a secondary metabolite that is assembled outside of the host membrane is described. Also described is the identification of homologous NRPS gene clusters from several additional microorganisms. The secondary metabolites produced by the NRPS gene clusters exhibit broad spectrum antibiotic activity. Thus, antibiotic compounds produced by the NRPS gene clusters, and analogs thereof, their use for inhibiting bacterial growth, and methods of making the antibiotic compounds are described.

  • Antithrombogenic and antibiotic composition of matter and method of preparation thereof. A random copolymer of a component of garlic and a biocompatible polymer has been prepared and found to exhibit antithrombogenic and antibiotic properties. Polymerization occurs selectively at the vinyl moiety in 2-vinyl-4H-1,3-dithiin when copolymerized with N-vinyl pyrrolidone.

  • High purity phosphorus and phosphorus compounds are prepared by first reacting H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/ with a lead compound such as PbO to form Pb/sub 3/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 2/. The Pb/sub 3/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 2/ is reduced with H/sub 2/ at a temperature sufficient to form gaseous phosphorus which can be recovered as a high purity phosphorus product. Phosphorus compounds can be easily prepared by reacting the phosphorus product with gaseous reactants. For example, the phosphorus product is reacted with gaseous Cl/sub 2/ to form PCl/sub 5/. PCl/sub 5/ is reduced to PCl/sub 3/ by contacting it in the gaseous phase with solidmore » elemental phosphorus. POCl/sub 3/ can be prepared by contacting PCl/sub 5/ in the gaseous phase with solid P/sub 2/O/sub 5/. The general process is particularly suitable for the preparation of radiophosphorus compounds.« less
  • Anion exchange resins including an acrylic backbone formed by the suspension polymerization of a mixture of an acrylic and a crosslinking monomer are useful in the removal of iodine and iodine compounds from gaseous effluents. Removal of radioactive iodine contaminants, particularly alkyl iodine compounds or hydrogen iodine, under extreme conditions, namely temperatures up to 180/sup 0/C and humidities up to 100 percent, from effluents resulting from a major nuclear accident could probably be adsorbed by these resins described herein.
