  • The financial health of the nation's utility cooperatives has been deteriorating in recent years, and presently accepted methods of determining cost of equity may be contributing to that decline. The authors examine the unique composition of the cooperative capital structure and offer a revised equation for calculating return on equity that allows for growth and the rotation of capital credits. 2 tables
  • Congress has attempted in the new law to provide increased incentives for investment in capital by replacing the depreciation deductions which previously could be taken with a capital cost recovery system called the Accelerated Cost Recovery System (ACRS). The major motivation for this change is that Congress wanted to provide business with added incentives to make additional capital investments in order to improve productivity. At first glance, the ACRS would appear to provide the impetus for additional capital formation when compared with the old system because of generally reduced depreciable lives and increased investment tax credit (ITC) benefits. A closermore » look, however, shows that in some cases the results achieved under the new system may be different than one would expect both for personal property and realty. In the case of realty, the depreciation method and the depreciable life available under the new system both work to make the ACRS more beneficial than the old depreciation rules. The purpose of this article, is to: (1) investigate those situations in which the tax savings associated with investment in personal property may not have been substantially increased; and (2) analyze the choice now facing taxpayers when they invest in realty.« less
  • Radioactive tracer tagging during stimulation treatments on vertical wells has been in use for many years and applications have been discussed in literature. More recently, multiple radioactive tracers have been employed to help evaluate various aspects of well stimulation. They have become standard industry practice for evaluation of treatment containment, fracture height growth, channeling behind casing, fracture initiation from perforations, diversion and acid or proppant distribution. In this paper completion techniques are analyzed using gamma ray-emitting isotopes and spectral-gamma ray logging. Examples of Austin Chalk and Bakken Shale evaluations show how operators can qualitatively compare stimulation and diversion effectiveness, andmore » completion methods by using tracer technology.« less
  • This article discusses new software and introduces a software project proposed for development. All software and peripherals which are described are for the Macintosh computers and are useful for oil and gas exploration. These programs model a number of geologic features including stratigraphy, growth faulting, sediment basin topography, basin geometry, and tectonics. Examples of the graphic capabilities of these programs are also displayed.
