Morphology and interfacial structures of [alpha]-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] fibers grown in Pd by internal oxidation

Alpha alumina fibers having the stable trigonal [alpha]-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] structure, were grown by internal oxidation in a Pd alloy containing 11 at.% Al. The fibers, possessing an average aspect ratio of about 30, grow with either [1[bar 1]00] and [1[bar 1]01] direction in Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] parallel to [110] Pd. The fibers are faceted with prominent interface planes observed for six specific orientations. The facets in alumina are low index planes corresponding to (0001), (11[bar 2]0) and (11[bar 2]3). A broad distribution in misorientation angle away from the parallel (0001)[parallel](110) orientation is observed with a maximum around 4[degree] leadingmore »« less

Atomic control and characterization of surface defect states of TiO(sub 2) terminated SrTiO(sub 3) single crystals.

By using an alternative wet-etch procedure, we have obtained high-quality atomically flat TiO{sub 2} terminated surfaces of SrTiO{sub 3} single crystals with the morphology equivalent to that of the conventional wet-etch methods. By applying a combined power of photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy imaging, and soft x-ray absorption (XAS), we were able to identify and monitor the complex evolution of oxygen defect states and Ti valency at the surface and near-surface layers. A series of seven structurally-similar compounds with different pairs of R{sub F} groups were prepared, characterized spectroscopically, and studied by electrochemical methods (cyclic and square-wave voltammetry), low-temperature anion photoelectron spectroscopy, and DFT calculations (five of the compounds are reported here for the first time). This is the first time that a set of seven R{sub F} groups have been compared with respect to their relative effects on E{sub 1/2}(0/-), electron affinity (EA), and the DFT-calculated LUMO energy.
