The authors have constructed a model of the auroral magnetosphere as a current-carrying nonhomogeneous plasma. They are able to model discrete alfven mode propagation in this model, which is consistent with observations of ULF waves. They show that magnetic flux tubes, supporting electric currents, can sustain alfven modes with very low frequencies.
